Not Your Light

Watch out, Sir,
for you are inquiring after a star not your own.
It cannot show you a new commodity
to enhance your portfolio,
nor bless the call giving the order
that would create value from victims.
It was once thought stars were like coal-burning furnaces
until they figured there could not be enough mines
to stoke such radiance:
their reach is off the grid.
So be warned, Sir.
The one who gives us life
will brand the fingers that touch him.
They are like shed blood.
No dungeon can contain their wail,
and this one throbs with a pulse
you cannot quell.
