Acts 6:1-14

Ascension

They call us the bride of Christ
who stand outside the gate and watch him go
waving until he disappears at security,
unmoving -
my daughter's face is fixed into the empty space
where he had been.
One hand of mine falls soft into her hair:
"Your daddy will be back soon.”

Turning, we feel the roar in our feet
as we make our way to the outside,
and there, yet in the terminal,
I have the queer but not unpleasant sense
that everything we see here
is a figure of speech.
