Matthew 27:50-52
Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. (NRSV)
The Tear
Once we have stepped over the line
into the reach of those who can do us harm,
all bets are off for a happy ending -
unless emptiness itself is happiness,
or some prelude,
or the satisfaction of having nothing left to lose
nor hope to gain
but for an act of God -
for the world has shown its limits,
and the only miracle we can expect
must come from that dark room
where holiness escapes the confines of former religion.
